Worn-out, cracked, or brittle weatherstripping is a major source of energy loss. A quick inspection will show you if it's time for an easy, money-saving replacement.

How to Inspect Your Weatherstripping

A quick check can tell you if your weatherstripping is working or if it's time for a replacement. Here’s what to look for on each type:

Magnetic Weatherstrip

  1. Check the Seal: Slowly close the door and watch the magnetic strip. It should pull itself firmly against the frame.
  2. Look for Damage: Inspect the strip for any cracks, brittle sections, or areas where it's pulling away from the door.
  3. Clean the Surface: Wipe the strip and the contact point on the frame with a damp cloth. Dirt and grime can prevent a strong magnetic seal.

Compression Weatherstrip

  1. Look for Wear: Check if the flexible 'bulb' or 'fin' is flattened, torn, or has become hard and brittle. It should be flexible and springy to the touch.
  2. Check for Gaps: When the door is closed, you shouldn't see any light or feel drafts. If you do, the strip may be worn out.

Foam Weatherstrip

  1. Inspect for Peeling: Check the adhesive side. Is the foam strip peeling away from the door or frame?
  2. Check for Compression: Press the foam. If it feels hard or doesn't spring back immediately, it's lost its sealing power and needs to be replaced.

Adhesive Weatherstrip

  1. Check the Bond: Gently pull at the edges to ensure the peel-and-stick backing is still firmly attached all along the frame.
  2. Look for Damage: Like foam, check if the material (often foam or rubber) is torn, brittle, or permanently flattened.
