As part of “Chapters of Change,” a limited series of historical retrospectives about key moments of change at the University, Penn Today explores how Penn adapted to shifts from World War II and the Sputnik science revolution. “The Second World War is the watershed here,” says educational historian Jonathan Zimmerman.

Mikhaidia Miller, a first-generation student graduating from Penn Nursing this May, is Penn First Plus’s (P1P) longest-serving front-desk staff member. Working toward her nursing career goals, Miller has benefited from P1P mentorship, programming, and community-building initiatives. “When you’re around other students who understand your experience and you can open up to them, it’s so much better—and you’re not alone,” she says.

Tracing the history of medicine over 2,000 years has taken Hsiao-Wen Cheng, a specialist in medieval China, on a journey through the past. She’s working with a group of colleagues on an anthology about 12 medical cures in Asian history and the ways that they overlap and intersect. “You can travel through time and space with these materials,” Cheng says.
