On hot days, workers are much more likely to get hurt on the job. Trains are more likely to be delayed, flight cancellations and postponements increase, and labor productivity falls. In a Q&A with environmental and labor economist R. Jisung Park, Penn Today explores the impact of extreme heat on academic success and worker productivity.

Penn Vet clinician Rose Nolen-Walston has a history of taking on unexpected challenges. This year she ran her second ultramarathon, which began in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and crossed unforgiving terrain, extreme heat, and freezing mountain heights. “There’s something really astoundingly meaningful, kind of at a gut level, of challenging yourself to do something that almost feels impossible and then being successful at it,” she says.

New Penn Medicine research finds that a “nudging” strategy for physicians in the emergency department may encourage prescriptions that blunt cravings for alcohol and dull its effects, offering an effective treatment for people with alcohol use disorder. “Our work shows that it only takes a small adjustment to make a huge impact on who gets the medicine they need,” says behavioral scientist Jeff Ebert.
