Neuroscientist Michael L. Platt says a gambling boom over the last decade has as much to do with human biology as it does business: The same ancient circuitry that once helped humans survive famine and uncertainty is now being engineered into apps that keep users betting faster than they can think. “Your susceptibility isn’t a personal failing,” says Platt, who researches risk-taking behaviors. “It’s deeply baked in.”
