Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers Unite to Fight Hunger

A powerful new regional movement is bringing Pittsburgh together in the fight against hunger. On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates, and Steelers, in partnership with the Richard King Mellon Foundation and GoFundMe, announced the launch of the #BurghProud Challenge – a month-long initiative in June 2026 encouraging the region to raise critical funds and awareness for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to help neighbors facing food insecurity.

Fueled by a $1 million matching grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the #BurghProud Challenge invites individuals across Pittsburgh and beyond to take action this June by moving their bodies, raising funds, and rallying their communities.

Registration for the #BurghProud Challenge is now open, with the challenge running June 1-June 30. Supporters can sign up, start a fundraiser, and learn more by visiting: pittsburghfoodbank.org/burghproud.

"An Awesome Group"

After the Penguins’ season ended in Game 6 of their opening-round series with Philadelphia, the sentiment in the locker room was that the team needed some time to process their emotions.

During locker cleanout day, the players were able to start putting into words what a remarkable year they had, despite the disappointing finish.

“It’s exciting times. Having been a lot of fun here lately,” Erik Karlsson said. “This year was a very positive year.”

The Penguins started out as a team with low external expectations, and ended up returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2022. They did so without ever deviating from the plan that President of Hockey Operations and GM Kyle Dubas has put together to ensure the Penguins can return to legitimate contention.

“I feel like, as a group, we probably did a lot more than people expected. So, I think that’s something to be proud of,” captain Sidney Crosby said.

Muse led Pittsburgh to a 41-25-16 record and 98 points, helping the Penguins reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2021-22 campaign.

His 41 wins were tied for the third-most in franchise history by a coach in their first year with the team, and his 98 points tied a franchise record for most points accumulated by a coach in their first year.
