Annual Backpack Drive helps hundreds of local students prepare for school

Princeton University faculty and staff generously donated more than 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to help youth across Mercer County prepare for school.

The Office of Community and Regional Affairs partnered with the University's office supplies provider, W.B. Mason, to support local K-12 students. Employees used W.B. Mason's website to purchase backpacks filled with binders, folders, notebooks, pencils, crayons, scissors and highlighters. 



Backpacks and supplies were donated to Princeton Human Services and

the United Way of Greater Mercer County. 

Innovative tech workforce training preps N.J. high school graduates for high-paying theater stagehand jobs

Aven Rivas had a dilemma.

After wrestling to attach U-brackets onto three speakers, each about the size and weight of a 30-pound kettlebell, she looked at the catwalk 25 feet above her head at Princeton’s Wallace Theater — where the next task was to hang the speakers from a truss. 

“I’m afraid of heights,” she told her work partner, Noni Burke. “But I’m going to do what Tess says — I’m going do to something every day that challenges me.” 



Rivas and Burke are two of four fellows in the inaugural cohort of the Lewis Center for the Arts’ Princeton Production Workforce Training (PPWT) program, a four-week summer intensive that provides training in theatrical tech work for New Jersey high school graduates.

Princeton innovation dean Craig Arnold to receive Catalyst Award from New Jersey Research & Development Council

Craig B. Arnold, vice dean for innovation and University innovation officer at Princeton, will receive the Catalyst Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey for his leadership in developing Princeton and the state as a hub of innovation.

The council also announced Tuesday that Bonnie Bassler, Princeton’s Squibb Professor in Molecular Biology, and postdoctoral fellow Justin Silpe *20 will receive an Edison Patent Award for their development of methods to preserve human breast milk.

School of Architecture graduate alumni Nathaniel Banks *21 and Yidian Liu *21, co-founders of PolyGone Systems, will receive the Emerging Tech Award for technology they developed to filter microplastics from water.

Princeton will lead U.S. effort to design better chips for wireless communication

Princeton University will lead a joint government-industry effort using AI to develop advanced semiconductors for wireless communication and remote sensing. The chips are critical for next-generation wireless networks, satellite communication, self-driving cars and smart health care technologies.

Summer Carillon Concert Series

Princeton University's annual Summer Carillon Concert Series takes place on Sundays at 1 pm. The Carillon is a musical instrument of 23 or more bells that when sounded produce music. Carillon bells are hung stationary with only the clapper moving against the lip of the bell. It is manually played from a console with both fists and feet activating batons and pedals attached to the clappers through mechanical linkage. There is no electronic assistance to ring the bells. Concerts are held rain or shine.

From Las Vegas to Rome: Photographs by Iwan Baan

In 2022, 50 years after Denise Scott Brown, Robert Venturi, and Steven Izenour declared in their influential book Learning from Las Vegas that the desert town was to the Strip what Rome is to the Piazza, the American Academy of Rome debuted the exhibition From Las Vegas to Rome, exploring dialogues between these two cities through images taken by Dutch photographer Iwan Baan. This traveling exhibition is opening for the first time in the US in a new iteration on view at the Princeton University School of Architecture.
