Garden ponds are starting to fill up with a familiar, jelly-like substance. Frogs and toads lay a lot of spawn in a small space, and it's most likely to hatch when left undisturbed – please don't move it! Watch from a distance and you'll see these strange globs develop into wriggling tadpoles. | | | |
 |
Fun fact: spawn is not the same!
There are three types of spawn. Frogs lay theirs in big clumps in shallow water; toad spawn comes in long chains in deeper water; while newts lay individual eggs on pond plant leaves. |
