How Much Free Will Should Your AI Agents Have?
The key to successful enterprise AI agent adoption is striking a deliberate balance between strict, deterministic rules for safety and compliance and nondeterministic autonomy for creative problem-solving.

Unlike conventional systems, which follow fixed rules and produce identical outputs for identical inputs, AI agents are inherently non-deterministic. They reason, generate plans, and make decisions based on probabilities and context.

Their behavior is flexible but not always predictable.

These probabilistic agents, according to Jayesh Govindarajan, EVP, Software Engineering at Salesforce, need a “deterministic backbone.” He defines this as a system of data, business logic, workflows, and guardrails that keeps agents meaningful, secure, and trustworthy.

How Voice AI Is Reshaping the $135 Billion Call Center Industry
Tammy Taylor, a director at the travel management platform Engine, has a simple yet ambitious goal: when her more than one million customers call, they should never have to press "0," suffer through Muzak, or navigate endless automated menus.

Engine is piloting Agentforce Voice, which uses AI to listen, interpret, and respond to customers with natural language processing and machine learning. The Salesforce-built system immediately connects a caller to a remarkably human-sounding AI agent.
