On the same day, you could be swimming in the sea, having a barbecue in a forest or hiking in the mountains, but sometimes you don’t even have to go that far. There are city trails in Funchal like Levada dos Piornais, which winds past rows of banana trees, or Levada dos Tornos, guiding you directly to charming tea houses. | I especially like it when a hike winds up at a poncha tavern. You’ll hardly ever see a Madeiran drink Madeira wine, but poncha? That’s the island’s tipple of choice.
