Second Harvest Heartland

Throughout history, people in America have united to drive change. This September, during Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Heartland is calling on Minnesotans to once again come together to end hunger in our state and across our nation.

With the largest cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in history now signed into law, food and health care will soon be further out of reach for millions of people—including tens of thousands of Minnesotans. Hunger in America is a crisis—and together, we can meet this moment.

It’s going to take all of us, but we can make a difference. This month, you can support your neighbors in need by visiting 2harvest.org/hunger-action-month and participating in the following:

  • Kick Off to End Hunger (Aug. 27 - Sept. 8)
    • As a new football season kicks off, Second Harvest Heartland is putting up a friendly challenge to Northern Illinois Food Bank as our rival hometown teams take to the field. In this head-to-head showdown, make a donation to Second Harvest Heartland from August 27 - September 8, to express your Minnesota purple pride (and help our neighbors in need!). If Second Harvest Heartland comes out on top, the leaders of Northern Illinois Food Bank will be sporting purple and gold following the game on September 8. Let’s get more food to those who need it and show Chicago this is our year on the field!
  • Meals that Matter (Sept. 9)
    • On Tuesday, September 9, dine out to make a difference! In honor of September 9 being Hunger Action Day, restaurants across the Twin Cities are donating a portion of that day’s proceeds to hunger-relief efforts. Participating restaurants and breweries include: Urban Growler Brewing, Duke’s On 7, Pub 819, Stanley’s NE Bar Room, The Bar Draft House, The Block Food + Drink (St. Louis Park & Rogers), The Howe Daily Kitchen & Bar, WELLS Roadside, and Boom Island Brewing Company.
  • Advocate
    • With hunger rates at record highs and the largest spending cuts to SNAP in history, your voice matters more than ever before. Join our community of anti-hunger advocates who stay informed about anti-hunger policies and encourage their lawmakers to support them to end hunger across our state.
  • Volunteer
    • Local food shelves and food banks are in urgent need of volunteers as our hunger crisis risks becoming a hunger catastrophe. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community during Hunger Action Month.
  • Donate
    • Minnesotans are losing the support they counted on to afford groceries due to recent cuts to SNAP food assistance. Our neighbors need us to take action now! Thanks to matching funds from generous sponsors, every $1 you donate can provide 6 meals to help fill the gap.

With 1 in 5 Minnesota households unable to afford the food they need, three years of record-breaking food shelf visits, and major cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, it’s more vital than ever we get everyone at the table to combat today’s hunger crisis.
