L-Theanine has a similar chemical structure to glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter. This allows it to compete with glutamate for receptor binding, toning down glutamate's stimulating effects and promoting a relaxed state.
Researchers found L-Theanine also enhances levels of GABA, the neurotransmitter that directly promotes relaxation (which we also include as an ingredient in all our formulations).
Lastly, L-Theanine may reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which makes it an excellent supplement for the evening when cortisol levels should be at low levels and dropping (you don't necessarily want to interfere with cortisol in the morning as it plays an important role in the daytime portion of your circadian rhythm).
