Merry Christmas! The city is officially glowing, and it’s crazy to think we are already at the end of the year.
Many of you might not know this, but December 25th wasn't the original date for the holiday. The tradition actually started as "Christ's Mass" to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but early Christians didn't have a fixed date. The Roman church eventually chose the 25th in the 4th century to align with winter solstice festivals like Saturnalia and Sol Invictus. Basically, they did it to ease the integration into broader culture (tbh, a pretty solid strategic move to draw focus away from pagan customs).
Fast-forward to the 19th century in the US, and things shifted toward the commercialism in modern day. The first explicit gift ad appeared in 1806, and retailers haven't looked back since.
Department stores like Macy's really fueled the fire, introducing window displays in 1862 and the Thanksgiving Parade in 1924 to officially signal the start of shopping season. While mass media cemented these shopping traditions, we know the real heart of the holiday is the food (and the spice). To support your holiday feasts, we are keeping our ovens running hot.
