And why did a team of neuroscientists go to Minnesota’s state fair last year? They were there to observe drunk people in a naturalistic experiment: one freed from the constraints of clinical trials to better simulate day-to-day experiences and behaviours. Such studies have been around for a while, but are currently enjoying a boom in the fields of neuroscience and psychology. The benefits could be far-reaching.
