I found the latest edition of The Telegram, our geopolitics column, fascinating but frightening. In Europe worries about America’s flakiness under Donald Trump are giving way to a bigger fear: that, while portraying himself as Western civilisation’s champion, he now regards actual Western democracies as adversaries. “In today’s Washington”, our columnist writes, Europe “is often spoken of with greater loathing than either China or Russia”.
Also in Washington, the Trump administration’s anti-drug war is coming under increasing scrutiny. Lawmakers—including Republicans—are demanding answers over reports that a recent strike on a suspected drug-smuggling boat may have amounted to a war crime. The deeper question is whether America’s entire campaign is legally defensible. |
