Travel mistakes — we’ve all made them.

I once made this epic mistake booking a hotel for an overnight layover. I also had to reschedule my trip to Germany’s Christmas markets when I realized the markets are not, in fact, open over Christmas.

Thankfully, the consequences weren’t severe — but some mistakes can be much costlier.

Here are some of the most important lessons we at TPG have learned the hard way, so you don’t have to:

Traveling abroad? Make sure you know your destination’s entry requirements and apply for any required documentation well in advance — take it from my colleague, who was literally deported once when he arrived ill-prepared!

Packing medication? Bring paperwork for any medications you’ll need on your trip, including certain over-the-counter drugs. Some countries require proof of specific vaccinations, too.

Renting a car? Don’t forget your driver’s license. But also check whether you need one of these additional permits to drive at your destination — or you may end up hoofing it.

Going on a cruise? Follow these tips to make the most of your port stops — and avoid getting left behind on the pier.

Booking a vacation rental? Keep your eyes peeled for these scams and know how to protect yourself from bad actors.
