Swearer Center’s End-of-Year and 40th Anniversary Celebration

Thanks to everyone who nominated faculty, community partners and/or students for recognition. In addition to honoring award recipients, this year’s event on April 24th will include a celebration with alumni and other special guests. Learn more here.

Community-Engaged Research and Teaching Retreat

This annual event on Wednesday, August 19, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., at 225 Dyer St., will bring together colleagues from across the university and featured community partners for a rich mix of lightning talks and interactive discussions. Faculty and staff with relevant responsibilities can submit this form to share their interest in participating and priorities for the agenda.

A Few More Days to Participate in the Brown Loves Providence  Campaign

Aligned with the campuswide Brown Ever True recovery effort, Brown Loves Providence invites students, faculty, and staff members to join in giving back to the city we love. Our collective gratitude to the city has no time limit, but this coordinated campaign through March 16 expresses appreciation for the aid the Providence community provided when we needed it most. Click here for suggestions for giving, volunteering, shopping and celebrating locally, as well as sharing stories and shoutouts.

In this video, Meredith Hastings, George Ide Chase Professor of Physical Sciences, Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences, and Professor of Environment and Society, and Jesus Holguin, Executive Director and Programming Steward of the Racial & Environmental Justice Committee in Providence, speak powerfully to their experience building a research collaboration grounded in shared power and ownership, trusting relationships, and knowledge held by communities as well as academics.

Faculty at Brown interested in engaging with education partners in Providence and Rhode Island are  encouraged to check out the Annenberg Community Engaged Education Research Funds as well. Proposals are due April 1.

CONGRATULATIONS

Ruby Erickson, a PhD candidate in musicology and ethnomusicology, and Allessandra (Sandy) Soares, a manager of community-engaged learning at the Swearer Center and the former executive director of the Capeverdean American Community Development Center, have co-authored "‘Kriolu Voices Sounding’: Tending to Epistemic Justice and Conflict in Collaboration” in Anthropology Today.

Rishika Kartik ‘26, a 2023 Royce Fellow, is one of four undergraduates receiving the national Campus Compact Student Leadership Awardr. She will be recognized at the organization’s conference this month. Deva Woodly, Professor of Political Science, Kettering Research Fellow, and Swearer Center Faculty Affiliate, will also speak in a plenary on inclusive democracy at the conference.

An ecoRI story on “Collaborative Efforts to Understand Lead Pollution in Providence” features a project led by Gavin Piccione, postdoctoral research associate in Environment and Society, and supported by a Sustainability Seed Grant. The story is part of a collaboration between ecoRI News and the Science Journalism course taught by Jennifer Adler, adjunct lecturer in Environment and Society; see more in the series here.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Brown University School of Public Health (SPH) recently released the seventh RI Life Index, sharing residents’ perceptions of social determinants of health and well-being. SPH also hosted a summit on health policy addressing some of the significant concerns around health care access and affordability.

Some of this year’s University Excellence Awards recognize staff who not only contributed to the Brown community but also engaged beyond campus, including the Center for Digital Scholarship team, receiving an Excellence Award for Diversity and Inclusion, citing the Stolen Relations tribally collaborative project, and Meredith Mendola, Program Manager, Center for Technological Responsibility, Reimagination and Redesign, receiving an Excellence Award for a Rising Star, in part for executing the Tech & Policy Summer School and the CNTR AISLE project.
