Dear friends,

In the ever-evolving story of global health, 2025 has been a challenging chapter. As we prepare to turn the page, I am reflecting on what inspired me to work in global health and stories from this year that continue to inspire me.

I invite you to peruse some of our “best reads” from this past year. Click on the cover of each book below to read the story. Each story of progress was shaped by the unwavering commitment of our partners, donors, ministries of health and healthcare workers – people like you – striving for a healthier world for all.

In my view, the purpose of all global health work is and has always been to prevent and relieve needless suffering, disability and death throughout the world – surely a noble calling. At The Task Force, we do this by helping countries build strong, sustainable, well-equipped clinical and public health systems, with well-trained doctors, nurses, epidemiologists and other health workers. These health systems prevent diseases (e.g., though timely vaccination of children and adults), stop the spread of infectious diseases (e.g., through the rapid detection and control of outbreaks as well as the outright elimination of certain infectious diseases), and provide proper care for those who do become ill. The story of global health is one of astonishing success, with amazing achievements such as the eradication of smallpox, the annual vaccination of over 100 million infants each year, and at least 56 countries now having eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease (such as blinding trachoma and lymphatic filariasis).

We hope each story inspires you to reflect on your own role in the global health narrative and the opportunity for each of us to make a difference today and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Patrick O'Carroll, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACMI
President and CEO
