How Is Whisky Made?

Whisky is a distilled spirit produced all over the world from grain. While barley, corn and rye are the most common to be used today, producers use everything from wheat to spelt and buckwheat in the search of flavour. Its precise origins are uncertain, but whisky in its modern form emerged in Scotland and Ireland in the 15th century, before spreading globally through trade, migration and shared distilling knowledge.

Despite wide variation in style, whisky production follows a shared structure: raw materials are processed to create sugars, fermented into alcohol, distilled to select and concentrate flavour, and matured - most often in oak casks. Time in wood shapes the spirit’s colour, character and complexity, making maturation a defining stage in the creation of every whisky.
