The ‘lost’ distillery that never faded away

Brora is one of the great ‘lost’ distilleries and its reputation has only grown since shuttering in 1983. Situated between Inverness and Wick on the Scottish Highlands’ east coast, this remote site created some of the most revered single malts of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Like its successor Clynelish, Brora made a full, waxy spirit that ages incredibly well. Indeed, whisky is still being bottled from the last few old casks in existence, making these releases increasingly rare. Happily, Diageo recommissioned the distillery in 2021 and we should all be able to try the fruits of this revival in a few years.
