After a prolonged battle, Congress has officially confirmed Steve Pearce as Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This means that the nation’s largest manager of public lands—with an estate totaling 245 million acres—is now led by a figure who has supported selling public lands.
But we can’t lose heart: Pearce's nomination generated an outpouring of opposition from both sides of the aisle. Americans want to keep public lands in public hands, as we’ve made loud and clear over the course of the last few months. Now we need elected officials to hold the line by watching Pearce closely and keeping him in check.
There’s no doubt that Pearce’s confirmation is bad news. He has called to “reverse the trend” of public lands ownership and consistently worked to make it easier for corporations to exploit public lands.
Though he has been confirmed, eyes across the nation are now fixed on Pearce. Now we need to ensure our representatives hold Pearce accountable for his actions in office!
