Jared Diamond on warning signs – and hope – for the future of democracy

“What’s going to happen now in the U.S.? I can’t predict how it’ll turn out. Nobody can,” said Diamond, who delivered UCLA’s 11th Luskin Lecture for Thought Leadership. But he thinks “a willingness to focus tactically on issues that other Americans care about and a willingness to create an America for all Americans” could bring people together across the political spectrum.

What is the universe made of? The physics and astronomy professor will explore this question in his Faculty Research Lecture on Friday. “When I talk to students — especially non-science majors — about these topics, some of them find it very scary and difficult,” Treu said. “My goal is to try to make them overcome the fear and see that actually, it’s not.”
