UNICEF and its partners are on the ground in Ituri province, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), supporting children and families as the deadly disease continues to spread.

For Mireille Kahindo and her 16-month-old son, Miki, that support came at a critical moment. When both mother and son contracted Ebola, they were admitted to a UNICEF-supported treatment center, where they received medical care and psychosocial support before recovering and returning home together.

But while Mireille and Miki were fortunate enough to survive, many of the patients around them were not.

In Ituri province, the Ebola outbreak is intensifying many challenges that already existed. Years of conflict and displacement have weakened health systems, leaving hospitals and clinics short on supplies and children especially vulnerable. Today, more than half of children under the age of 5 are chronically malnourished, and more than one in five children have never received a single vaccine.

Although children account for about 15% of confirmed Ebola cases, they are almost twice as likely to die as adults. For many children, the danger extends beyond the virus itself:
