From traditional MOLLE webbing to low-profile MOLLE-Air

Traditional MOLLE uses 1-inch-wide nylon webbing arranged in horizontal rows, usually spaced 1 inch apart. To attach a pouch, the mounting straps are woven alternately through the webbing on the pouch and the PALS rows on the pack. This ladder-locking method spreads the load across several attachment points and helps prevent the pouch from shifting. We continue to use traditional MOLLE webbing where maximum compatibility and strength are most important, including on the back of organizer pouches such as the FATPack 5x8 medical pouch.

Traditional MOLLE is durable and proven, but it can give an everyday backpack a more military or tactical appearance. To create a cleaner look without giving up modularity, Vanquest developed MOLLE-Air. Instead of stacking heavy rows of exposed webbing, MOLLE-Air uses precisely die-cut or laser-cut slots in materials such as Hypalon and laminated loop/Cordura fabric. The result is a lower-profile MOLLE panel that blends more naturally into an everyday carry backpack.

Different MOLLE-Air materials provide different benefits. Hypalon is highly durable, slip-resistant, and resistant to sunlight and many chemicals. Laminated loop/Cordura combines MOLLE attachment points with a hook-and-loop surface for patches, identifiers, or compatible organizers. The TRIDENT-32 backpack, for example, features a loop-faced MOLLE-Air panel that supports both gear expansion and ID patches for personalization while maintaining a streamlined exterior.

How to attach MOLLE pouches and accessories securely

MOLLE is a universal attachment standard, but not every pouch uses the same mounting hardware. Some MOLLE-compatible pouches have built-in straps and snaps, while others are designed to work with separate sticks or clips. The best attachment method depends on the weight of the item, how often it will be removed, and whether it is intended for external carry.

Many everyday organizer pouches do not include built-in attachment straps because users often carry them inside a backpack. Leaving off the hardware keeps the pouch lighter, cleaner, and easier to store. When external attachment is needed, MOLLE Sticks can be woven through the webbing on the pouch and the MOLLE panel on the pack. This creates a firm connection without altering either item.

Purpose-built external accessories often include their own mounting system. The HYDRA Bottle Holder can be attached to MOLLE webbing or worn on a belt, and its sewn-in straps and snaps help support the weight of a filled bottle. The TQ-1 Tourniquet Holder also uses built-in straps and snaps because it is intended to keep vital equipment such as a tourniquet, shears, and gloves secure and immediately accessible.

Tips and practical applications to use the MOLLE system

For the most secure setup, use every available row of MOLLE webbing and weave the attachment strap back and forth between the pouch and the pack. Skipping rows may allow the pouch to sag, bounce, or pull away from the mounting surface. Before attaching anything, plan the location based on weight, accessibility, and balance. Frequently used gear should remain easy to reach, while heavier items should stay closer to the center of the backpack whenever possible.

The TRIDENT-21 & TRIDENT-32 backpacks feature loop-faced MOLLE-Air panels on the front, allowing users to mount MOLLE accessories, morale patches, and ID markers. The Hypalon MOLLE-Air panels on the sides of the MARKHOR-45 and the IBEX-26 / IBEX-35 backpacks provide durable, non-slip attachment points for small accessories, carabiners, or secured cordage. On the KATARA-16 and JAVELIN-18 sling backpacks, laminated Cordura MOLLE-Air panels can also support reflectors or safety lights for improved visibility after dark.

MOLLE is also useful for medical, overlanding, off-road, and emergency-preparedness setups. FATPack or FTIM organizers can be mounted to the back of FATPack-Pro backpacks to keep supplies separated, visible, and ready to deploy. The ELASTO Gear Lock fits 1-inch MOLLE webbing and helps secure long or irregularly shaped equipment vertically, such as tripod legs and axe handles. Its one-hand release makes it easier to access equipment without removing the entire attachment.

Convert MOLLE accessories to hook-and-loop organization

MOLLE excels at secure external expansion, but it is generally a semi-permanent attachment method. Once a pouch is fully woven into place, repositioning it takes more time than moving a hook-and-loop accessory. That makes MOLLE ideal for equipment that should stay firmly attached, but less convenient for internal organization that may change from day to day.

Hook-and-loop panels offer flexible positioning inside a bag, allowing pouches to be moved without reweaving straps. However, they may not securely support heavy external pouches. MOLLE is better for load-bearing attachment, while hook-and-loop is ideal for quick internal organization.

The MOHL-Air panel connects these two systems by converting MOLLE accessories into hook-and-loop-compatible organizers. MOHL stands for “MOLLE onto Hook-and-Loop.” Attach a MOLLE pouch to the MOHL-Air panel, then place the panel inside a loop-lined backpack or bag. Vanquest later expanded this concept with the MOHL-Web panel, which creates a flexible web for securing odd-shaped items inside your pack.
