Hi Email,

There are a lot of joint supplements out there, which also means there are a lot of questions about which ones are actually worth buying.

We asked our staff veterinarian, Dr. Elizabeth DeLomba, DVM, what she recommends pet parents look for when choosing a joint supplement. Here's what she told us:

"Choosing from all the ingredients out there can be challenging. Start by finding a company you can rely on. Supplements are less regulated than pharmaceutical drugs, so it's important to look for independent verification of quality, such as the NASC Quality Seal."

Her next step is following a simple checklist she uses when evaluating joint supplements:

  • Science-backed ingredients like green-lipped mussel, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, hyaluronic acid, and curcumin.

  • Clear feeding directions—including a loading period when appropriate.

  • A formula that's easy to give every day, because consistency matters.

She also noted it's important to not expect overnight results. Joint supplements work gradually, and most pets need several weeks of consistent use before you'll notice meaningful improvements.
