There are fewer than 380 North Atlantic right whales left on Earth.
Right now, NOAA is considering changes to the Vessel Speed Rule, the regulation that helps protect right whales from life-threatening and potentially fatal ship strikes. The proposed change could shift away from speed restrictions for vessels near right whale habitats, replacing them with detection and alert technologies that are still in development.
We believe technology has real promise as part of the solution. But it’s not ready to stand alone, and removing proven protections before new ones are in place puts this critically endangered species at serious risk.
WCS is urging NOAA to take a science-based, phased approach. It’s time to add your voice.
