This week was a bit cuckoo. I think the only real rest I managed was a few deep breaths between rounds of adulting.
It started with a bit of family drama (my fault, not theirs, they’re great, I’m… still in beta). On top of that, I’m prepping for a big trip to Japan at the end of August. It's a place that feels more restful than anywhere I’ve ever traveled. But even planning for something I love comes with its own kind of pressure. There’s this personal myth I carry that it'll be real rest when
I'm lying in a meadow, breathing deeply, radiating god-level emotional stability. I'd rarely get any real rest if that was the only way.
Right now, my version of rest looks like this: I’m on the couch on a Friday night, writing this Wimp newsletter. Mochi, our dog, is nearby, probably judging my posture (she’s got a next-level side-eye). My feet are tucked under a cushion, sinking into that cozy pressure. My daughter will wander down soon so we can all watch the new season of
Wednesday together. My breath is doing its quiet, life-sustaining thing. That’s it. That’s the miracle.
I don’t need a field to rest. I don’t need a self-care routine curated by a wellness influencer. Sometimes rest is just being exactly where I am, without grading myself or trying to turn it into an achievement.
So here’s your nudge: What's your version of rest today? If the answer is that. you're standing in the kitchen eating shredded cheese over the sink... no judgment, I just hope it’s delicious.

Hey peeps. Share the newsletter. Share a single bean of your delicious decaf. Share your love for calm. Every time you do the universe give a kitten a home. I can't back that up, but I'm very certain of it.

An Article / How to host without losing your mind: Katherine Goldstein’s guide to ditching Pinterest-grade dinner parties for something saner: minimal cleaning, paper plates if you want, and food you were already going to make. Because the point isn’t to impress, it’s to actually
see each other before your kids start college.

Art / Mesmerizing Art Sculptures Imagine nature’s patterns pulled into focus, then multiplied until they hum. I know that it sounds like I'm on a psychadelic mushroom joyride, but honestly that's sort of what Herschel's builds are like. Up close, the details are hypnotic; from across the room, they feel like they might start breathing.

A Good Thing / Cleaning up as deep goodness: Santa Cruz skater with a broom. Jesse keeps local skateparks clean enough to land a kickflip without bailing. His “Scape & Destroy” series turns that quiet maintenance into a love letter for skate culture, funded by merch, hustle, and probably a few scraped elbows. I love this guy.

A Loud / Scream like it's gonna set you free. Every Sunday at 7 p.m., people meet on the North Avenue Beach Pier in Chicago, breathe deep, and scream their freakin' asses off into Lake Michigan. No fee, no rules, no need to explain your week, just catharsis in the open air. I feel like the seagulls might take it personally, but you know, that's there issue to work through.

A Now Thing / Turns out immediacy can be calm: The Imperfectionist’s cure for creative stagnation: delete the to-do lists, bookmarks, and saved-for-later pile. Stop hoarding inspiration and act in the moment, even if imperfectly. Because momentum lives in the doing, not in the folder you’ll totally get to someday.

Trying to create gentler habit and routines. Hard doesn't work for me.
|
I’m terrible at routines, I either obsess for two weeks or forget entirely. Sobriety taught me habits stick when they fit my identity, not just willpower. Now I keep them small, flexible, and forgiving. No streaks, no guilt just things I want to return to, even after I wander. How about yours?

An unreal delicious lightroast coffee using Wilton Benitez’s thermal shock process—two rounds of fermentation, sterilization, and rinsing—plus all natural sugarcane EA decaffeination for vibrant flavor.
"I've tried several decafs and they were never able to reach the flavor of specialty coffees... I was shocked by the lovely flavor profile of this coffee. It's the first decaf I've drank and enjoyed fully black."
