One of the most grounding lessons I’ve carried from my 12-step experience is “just do the next right thing.” Not the perfect fix, not the master plan, just the next step that is in line with reality.
I’ve needed that reminder this week. Freelance projects are moving and I need them to keep the lights on, Wimp is growing slowly, but if my dream to be full-time on Wimp by this time next year is to be a reality, we have a LOT to do.
There are a hundred paths to get there: marketing, partnerships, finding and communicating with the people who want better decaf, and my brain wants to chase them all like a golden retriever in a field full of tennis balls.
Comparison doesn’t help either. Other brands move faster, look bolder, and it’s easy to feel behind before I’ve even finished my morning cup of Coltrane. If I pause, breathe, and notice what’s right in front of me, I *might* remember: all I really have to do is
the next right thing.
Sometimes it's deciding what the number one thing to do is today. The thing that unlocks other things. Sometimes it's just sitting down on the back porch and breathing and letting go of all ambition just to be with the clouds. This is decaf to me.
The artist Chris Judge’s
Daily Cloud project (example above) where he doodles faces onto clouds, reminds me of this too. Simple, playful, here-and-now. That’s how Wimp will grow: not in one leap, but cloud by cloud, cup by cup, next right thing by next right thing.
