I’m writing this from Tokyo, where I'm spending the first 5 days of a 34 day trip in Japan. This is the longest I’ve ever stepped away from client work. It's a gift to myself. It's a kind of mini sabbatical. It was not easy to choose this.

One of the big reasons I started Wimp was to find some margin — some room to breathe. This past year I’ve been running freelance design projects. It’s been incredible and constant. I’ve been saving up, so I could give myself a little extra space. It's an experiment trusting the work will still be there when I get back. But that trusting is not nearly as strong a muscle as my OCD looping worry muscle. That muscle is olympic strong.

The plan is to take long walks (when it's not too hot to do so), photography, writing, generally get lost, and see what life feels like when I’m not squeezing every drop of productivity out of myself.

Of course, my inner freak-out goblin is still here: “what if you run out of work, what if people forget you're a designer, what if you have to drain your savings and end up penny-less, frail and old.” I’m trying to let that part of me chill TF out and not ring my bell every morning. My goal is to sit down with that voice over a morning decaf without needing to do anything about it.

A Science / An atlas of our solar systems. Whoa:
I'm a fan of science. Mostly because science isn't fixed, it's constantly curious, constantly guessing, constantly reforming it's perspective on the world. This atlas of space is one of those amazing parts of the internet that really puts things in perspective.

A Mystery / How do Eels, ya know, do it...?
Did you know that we don't know, know one really knows, how Eels reproduce? How is that even possible? We are trying to get to Mars. We're inventing AI that will make us their pets in 50 years, but we don't know how Eels get jiggy with it?! This is a great little newsletter article about that.

A Sign / Slow signage is better signage:
One of the hallmark characteristics of the things I look to post here on the Wimp newsletter are things that go in the face of the efficiency train, and frankly things that make sense. These classified type signs that are painted by hand fit that category to a tee.

A Timelapse  / Good things take time.
It's bonkers to sit down and create a timelapse of something, like I did above with my iPhone, but Paul Wehden takes this SOOOO much further and creates a kind of living movement through a space. It has this effect of collapsing geography and making it small and special. 

A Gift / Ephemeral painting for passengers:
It's the things that AI or algorhythms can't do that seem to stick out for me these days and it's what I crave. It's the slow way. The way these airport workers entertain stuck passengers is just a gift and a small piece of delight. Art is found in the craziest places.
