Wimp Decaf Coffee Co
Coffee on a saucer inside of a cafe

Hey folks. It’s Tuesday near the end of the year, I’m sitting outside even though it’s about 40º. Birds are chirping like they don't know what day it is. Last night we had friends over, sat around the fire making s’mores, listened to the kids laugh and be goof-balls, and laughed together about how little we could actually prepare for whatever the next phase of parenthood turns out to be. These simple things are so good.

It’s coming up on 12 months since the official launch of Wimp. I’ve learned a lot this year about myself and about running a physical-goods business. I also have a small, persistent gremlin on my shoulder who is deeply concerned we didn’t sell enough coffee. He’s upset about how we basically slept through Black Friday. He’s convinced someone else is out there getting ready to go faster, smarter, more cunning, and will make millions of dollars, which will achieve them permanent happiness (Possibly more theory than peer reviewed research).

But here I am, on this porch, drinking genuinely good coffee that exists because of an idea, a lot of small steps, and a shit-ton™ of hard work building a brand and the intricacies of an ecommerce backend with my collaborator and dear friend Liam. We have a real business. It’s not paying us yet, and someday we sure hope it does, by-god! But it’s also not costing us money right now, and that matters.

I get to work from my back porch. I get to connect with friends without feeling like I'm running out of time. I get to be interrupted by my wife while I’m writing this, and let it roll off. I took real risks leaving the agency world to try to build a calmer life with the limited time I have left on this space-ball, and they are paying off, even if not financially yet. I can keep taking chill steps forward, listening to the part of me that already has enough. I don’t get it right very often, but I think I like this path. Thank you for being here beside Liam and I while we experiment here. It really means a lot.

Happy Holidays friends. Enjoy the links. If this connects for you, please do consider sharing it with others. It helps Wimp grow organically, free-range, grass-fed.

FORWARD TO A FRIEND
Probably a bad idea

A Process / Paper Lanterns are hard to make:
Maybe you can tell I'm on a kick about handmade things and the process of making them. I'm trying to poke holes in the distortion field that is fast merchandize. This does that in a big way. See how this family makes traditional rice paper lamps in Japan.

A Book / Ordinary Time: Lessons Learned While Staying Put
I'm noticing that I'm drawn to embroidered things lately and this is one of them. I think it's the character of the time I know it takes to design and then sew these crafts. It's not easy work. It's detailed.

A Video / Why so ugly tho?
A short film about noticing. How the quiet details around us like benches, bins, doorbells, lamp posts, shape how we feel and live, and how they've become quite freakin' bland and utilitarian in the last 100 years.

A Post  / Survive annoying shit.
A practical, calming guide to everyday annoyances. Clinical psychologist Patricia E Zurita Ona shows how small hassles add up, and how to use your tools. Might be helpful for family time 😉

A Rental / Real tree, but cool for motha earth?
This is way the eff out in California, but I love that some folks have figured out some dope ways to have real trees for the holidays, but not need to cut them down. I dunno how much actual difference this makes, but I still like the vibe.

Have a link you want to share?

If you find dope stuff on the internet you think would be a good fit, please share it so we can all enjoy it!

"Wow, this is amazing. Calming the f&#@! down is now easier than ever. No excuses, I just order, grind, and pour it in my mouth." *

* Some people suggest this quote may be made up. I dunno. Rumors spread like wildfire.
