Dear Email,
“Mother” is a word that conveys love, protection, sacrifice and resilience. A mother fights on for her family, even when she has reached the limit of her strength. Today, we celebrate those who raised us.
Today, we honor them.
At World Relief, we have the privilege of serving mothers and maternal figures, as well as serving alongside them. Around the world, millions of mothers have been forced to flee their homes for the survival of their families.
This is our message to them and those who stand by them:
To you who fled conflict with your baby strapped to your back, holding the hand of another child, pressing on to survive, we bow in respect.
To you who fast to feed your children in refugee and IDP camps, and even shelter others who have lost their parents — you are our heroes.
To you who start from scratch in another country or culture, toiling day and night so your children have a better future — you inspire us.
And to you, host, volunteer, advocate, who stand shoulder to shoulder with these mothers and their children, opening your homes and hearts, we look up to you.
On this special day, we invite you to make a donation in solidarity with mothers who have given everything and deserve so much more.
One of these mothers is Amina.
When there was nothing left, she walked through danger to save her child. We met Amina in Geneina, western Sudan, where World Relief operates one of the last remaining health and nutrition centers.
When asked what she had eaten during her pregnancy, she replied: “Leaves.”
With no food available, she survived her pregnancy on boiled wild greens — and after giving birth, her body could no longer produce milk. Desperate, she walked for hours through dangerous terrain to reach our clinic, where her child was enrolled in a therapeutic feeding program and began to recover. Today, Amina uses her experience to help other mothers in her community identify malnutrition and nourish their children.
This is what a mothers love looks like.
If her strength reminds you of a maternal figure in your own life, consider making a gift in their honor. Together we can give mothers — near and far — the hope and support they need to carry their family forward.
Happy Mother's Day to all,
World Relief
P.S. A mother’s love can’t be detained — but too often, mothers are. One mother went weeks without holding her infant. Another crosses borders just to keep her family connected. These are everyday realities shaped by policies that keep families apart. Today, we’re sharing their stories — read them in our latest blog.
