As a combat medic in Iraq, U.S. Army veteran Jason Foster treated injured soldiers every day.
Sniper fire, mortars, and blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were a daily occurrence. One of those blasts injured Jason’s brain, but he was told there was no one to replace him. His unit needed him — so he had to tough it out.
When Jason returned home, the effects of his brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) became overwhelming. He attempted to take his own life. “I was trying to deal with all this trauma, all at once, all by myself,” says Jason.
At the urging of his wife, Jason finally sought the help he needed. He went to a WWP Project Odyssey®, an adventure-based mental health program, and discovered a camaraderie he didn’t know existed. That was when his journey of healing began. |
