Project Odyssey: Adventure-Based Mental Health Support

WWP understands that every warrior’s mental health journey is unique. But they don’t have to face their challenges alone. Project Odyssey® empowers veterans, their families, and caregivers to create a path to psychological well-being — together. This 12-week mental health program uses adventure-based learning to help warriors with PTSD, anxiety, and depression manage their unseen wounds, enhance their resiliency skills, and live more fulfilling lives. During Project Odyssey, participants attend a 5-day retreat where they are challenged to try new experiences that push them beyond their known limits. By working together to overcome challenges, warriors and their loved ones develop new communication skills, achieve personal goals, and make lifelong positive changes — all thanks to your generous support. Forging a New Path Through Service

Melvin Gatewood is no stranger to service or sacrifice. He grew up in a service-focused family and enlisted in the National Guard before graduating from high school. During his deployment to Iraq, a Humvee explosion left Melvin severely burned and injured. He vividly remembers the explosion and the instincts that kicked in after. “We just wrapped my arm up, and I continued the mission,” Melvin recalls. He focused solely on everyone else. His own pain and injuries were the furthest thing from his mind. When he came home, Melvin faced a grueling physical recovery, survivor’s remorse, and PTSD. “For a long time, I suffered in silence,” he says. “I had to make a change.” Through programs like Soldier Ride®, Project Odyssey, and WWP Talk, Melvin began to find healing and purpose.
