The U.S. and Iran have reached a peace deal, potentially ending more than three months of war in which thousands have died. Here’s what to know.

The details: President Trump announced the framework of a deal, which will reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the U.S. naval blockade. “Let the oil flow!” he wrote on social media. An Iranian official confirmed yesterday that warfare would cease “immediately and permanently.” [NBC News]
Oil prices: In response to the news, shares in Asia and Europe jumped and Brent crude dropped 4.7% to $83.24, having peaked at about $120 from a prewar price of around $70 a barrel. Analysts warned that a lack of detail about the deal could lead to volatility in the oil market in the coming days. [BBC News]
What happens next: The deal will not be implemented and the strait will not be reopened until the deal is signed on Friday in Switzerland. Israel said it would hold on to land seized in Lebanon as it battles Hezbollah. Trump will meet with world leaders today at the G7 summit in France, where the war will likely be on the agenda. [AP]

Trump’s 80th birthday

Mixed martial arts fighters squared off on the White House South Lawn at UFC Freedom 250, marking the nation’s 250th anniversary and coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday. In the main event, American Justin Gaethje defeated Georgian-Spanish fighter Ilia Topuria. [CBS News]

Knicks fever hits NYC

Street pizza, orange-and-blue lights and a huge party: The Big Apple was the place to be as the city celebrated the Knicks’ first NBA championship win in 53 years. Guard Jose Alvarado appeared in a citywide parade, with another scheduled for Thursday. [Yahoo Sports]

Oliver Tree dies

The musician and director Oliver Tree died at age 32 in a helicopter accident in Brazil that killed six people. Videos for his songs “Life Goes On” and “Miss You” have been viewed hundreds of millions of times on YouTube. Tree was on tour in Brazil at the time. [Hollywood Reporter]

East Coast storms

Nearly 80 million East Coast residents from northern Georgia to Maine were on alert for serious storms last night, with forecasts of damaging winds, large hail and lightning. Over the weekend, severe storms wreaked havoc in parts of the central Plains. [ABC News]

Carolina triumphs

The Hurricanes blanked the Golden Knights in Game 6 to claim their second Stanley Cup, helped by a star turn from Brandon Bussi. The title was a full-circle moment for Carolina, which last won in 2006 with current coach Rod Brind’Amour as captain. [Yahoo Sports]
