Coming at the end of the circuit’s sole DRS zone, Turn 1 is one of Lusail’s chief overtaking points. The preferred route in 2021 was an attack down the inside, mostly because of the speed of the corner, but on lap 29 Checo decided to do the opposite and a massively brave move on Fernando Alonso around the outside saw him get a better line through Turn 2 and claim P4. Nice.
Corners 4-5
A pair of closely linked right handers, Turns 4 and 5 don’t look like great overtaking spots but after Checo had passed Esteban Ocon at the start of lap 47, the rivals had a mighty scrap through these two corners as Ocon tried to fight back. Punchy as always, Checo came out the winner.
Corners 12-14
High-speed Lusail has plenty of corners that get the blood racing, but this sequence at the start of Sector 3 is among the most impressive. Three quickfire right-hand corners, taken at well over 250km/h, with high G levels, and soaring lateral loads through the tyres puts the car under maximum strain. Get the downforce levels right and this could be taken flat out in qualifying, bringing a heap of lap time.
Corners 16
Not the most glamorous corner, but it’s from here that any attack along the pit straight and into Turn 1 is launched. It’s crucial to stay close to the car in front but that’s not easy when you’re in fourth or fifth gear and at around 170km/h. It could also be a big corner in qualifying as well, as in 2021 this was a corner where track limits were monitored closely.

Three points. That’s all that stands between Max and a remarkable third title on the bounce, a tally that would make him just the fifth driver in F1 history to take three or more championship crowns in a row.
Destiny in the desert. Max’s moment of triple truth begins… Let’s go.
