I’m a Kiwi that has spent the last 16 years writing, coding, designing, and sending emails, but my career took a different turn initially. Fresh out of University, I landed a marketing coordinator role at a major car manufacturer in Auckland, New Zealand. While it seemed like an ideal job, I quickly discovered that it wasn’t going to be a good long-term fit. The primary focus of the role involved printing thousands of direct mail leaflets, which felt like a financial drain and environmentally irresponsible. Moreover, gauging the ROI of these campaigns proved nearly impossible. It became evident that there had to be a more effective way.

After 12 months of turning a small forest into paper leaflets, I left NZ for London and landed an entry-level job focused on digital marketing. I was given a crash course in a product called Dreamweaver and shown how to upload HTML into an ESP called Emailvision. The learning curve was steep, and I spent many late nights in the office reading Campaign Monitor and Litmus blog posts to learn how to fix those white lines in Outlook or trying to figure out why my email looked like complete sh*t in Gmail. It was challenging, but I loved it.Β 

Email enabled me to be creative, solve complex problems, and make a measurable impact on my company in a short period of time. I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my career, and I ended up spending over ten years working in Professional Services, Strategy, Product Marketing, and Sales Engineering at ESPs like Campaign Monitor, Lyris, Emma, Sailthru, and Liveclicker.Β 

Today, I still love email just as much as I did when I started, although the industry has completely changed. When I started, it could take six months to set up a cart abandonment email (Seriously). Today, you can do it with a few clicks. Technology has made almost every aspect of email marketing easier than it used to be, and that’s a great thing. But it means that email marketers need to elevate what they are doing in terms of design, content, and strategy. It’s more competitive than ever, and you can no longer rely on sending constant discounts to meet your revenue targets.Β
