Birthday subject line FAQ
Should birthday subject lines use the subscriber's first name?
Yes. This is one of the few sends where a first name consistently earns its place, because the email is literally about the person. Lines like Flight Centre's "Happy (half) birthday, Andrew! 🎁" and LA Kings' "Andrew, Birthday Club is BACK! 🎉" show the pattern, just keep your data clean and set a fallback so nobody gets a blank where their name should be.
Should I lead with a gift or a discount in the subject line?
Gift framing usually beats a naked discount because it matches the occasion; in our sample only 17% of birthday lines use discount language at all. Promise a present in the subject line, then put the exact offer in the preview text or body where it reads as generosity rather than a transaction.
Is it better to send on the exact birthday or during the birthday month?
Strong programs often do both: a birthday-month kickoff that gives people time to redeem, then a day-of send that catches peak goodwill. Estée Lauder's "Don't Forget 🎈 Tell Us Your Birthday" shows the step before either, collecting the date itself. If you only send one, day-of (or the day before) tends to feel most personal.
How promotional should a birthday subject line be?
Lead with warmth and let the offer ride along. Only 8% of the lines in our library name an exact percent off, and standouts like Goldbelly's "The Birthday Shop is OPEN! 🎂🎉🎈" sell the celebration, not the coupon. A reliable formula: celebratory hook in the subject line, offer specifics in the preview text.
